Styling Guide
Things to Consider
What is the weather going to be like? A comfortable outfit for adults and kids alike can make the shoot less stressful and can make action and play shots easier!
Do you want the season to be apparent? If so, consider a seasonal color pallet!
Remember: These are guidelines not rules. There are exceptions to everything, especially if you're looking for something very specific.
Complement,
Don't match
We want tones and patterns that complement one another but don't necessarily match.
Layer and accessorize
Belts, scarves, jewelry, jackets, socks and hats can all be used to elevate your look!
Pops of color, pattern and texture
Generally speaking solid more neutral colors work best, but don't be afraid to add a pop of a brighter color or a pattern! But remember, less is more.
Adding some texture can also really help an image stand out! Try something lace, knit, tweed, denim or wool.
Don't forget the kicks!
One of the most overlooked aspects when deciding on an outfit is the shoes. If you can't find a shoe you like, consider going barefoot for your shots!
The DO's
The classics Current trends will date your photos 10 years from now.
Nicely fitted: Not too baggy and not too tight, easy to move in.
Statement pieces: Patterns and bold colors are nothing to be afraid of. They can work great...in moderation!
The DONT'S
Bright colors: Neons and extremely saturated colors can make skin tones look strange. Try a more muted version of the same color.
Logos/text/characters: Words and cartoon characters draw attention away from the most important part of the photo: you!
Tiny/complicated patterns: As cute as they can be in real life, they don't always translate well in camera.
Athletic wear: Can look much too casual for a family portrait.
The Details Matter
Make sure nails (and toenails if applicable) are freshly painted or clean.
Hair bands need to be off wrists well before the shoot (they can leave marks) and phones and keys should be out of pockets before shooting.
